Our Approach
Integrated. Contextual. Faith-Informed. Impact-Driven.
We blend academic rigor with practical solutions and ethical leadership. Guided by ILU’s core values; Integrity, Accountability, Passion for Excellence, Transformation. We connect climate literacy with economic empowerment, environmental justice, and spiritual formation.
Founding Story
The Institute of Sustainability was born from ILU’s deep commitment to Christlike leadership for societal transformation. It emerged in April 2024 in response to the serious climate related challenges gripping the Horn of Africa and the world. Faculty, students, and stakeholders envisioned a space where theology, science, and action converge — and asked:
What if faith-based institutions played a leading role in the climate change movement in Africa? That vision became The Institute of Sustainability and Climate Action: a beacon of hope for communities and a platform for justice-driven and values anchored innovation.

ILU Ethos & Stewardship Mandate
We are deeply rooted in ILU’s mission to develop Christlike leaders for Africa and the world. At The Institute for Sustainability and Climate Action, sustainability is not just environmental — it’s spiritual, ethical, and communal. Biblical Foundations: Genesis 1:28; 2:15 – Stewardship over creation, Micah 6:8 – Justice, mercy, and humility, Romans 8 – Creation groans for renewal, Matthew 25 – Faithfulness with resources
This ethos shapes our teaching, research, and public engagement — inspiring leaders to see climate action as worship, witness, and wise governance.
