Last year’s theme at ILU that was given by the Vice Chancellor was from Isaiah 43: 18-19:
“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” (NIV)
As the ILU Community gathered for a the Large Group meeting on Tuesday this week under the auspices of the Practical Ministry Department meeting, we acknowledged that indeed the Lord is doing a new thing at ILU.
One of our Alumnus, Jeremiah Amani Usagi of the class 2014, Master of Arts Leadership Studies (MALS) surprised us with a gift of a vehicle, a brand new Van designated to the work of the Practical Ministry Department and ILU at large. Not only did he bless us with a van but he also presented computers for the library and books to the university!
As Jeremiah shared with the community his moving testimony, his trust and faith in God for his master’s studies and his journey of life, one thing that was consistently evident – there were people in his life at ILU, at church, and good close friends, who contributed to shaping his life. Many of these people’s stories; intertwined with his story and produced a family of faith in his life.
Jeremiah as we call him, brought along his wife Rose whom he wedded about a year ago; and his five close friends who have had a huge influence in his life in the last four years. As they were studying the book “Daring Faith” by Rick Warren, they did not even have a car of their own as a family when the burden to donate a Van to ILU was laid on his heart. In her remarks, Rose said they were not giving out of surplus but were putting their daring faith into practice.
As he shared about his journey, he cautioned the gathering, “not to ignore the need to have people to fellowship with and to do life with in whatever you do”. He believes in individual responsibility for corporate good.
In his response, the Vice Chancellor, Dr. Benjamin Musyoka remarked, “I am so glad that the Lord has given me an opportunity to see a day like this!” He reiterated that indeed the Lord is doing a new thing seeing that these brethren have come to encourage us. The VC noted that God was using one of us not because they had but because they were being obedient.
“Today there is no greater practical ministry than what you have done. You have translated theory into practice”, he told the couple.
Dr. Musyoka reminded the gathering that institutions that are successful in the world like Harvard University, among others have been build and sustained by their alumni.
The van and the computers were thereafter dedicated for the work of the Lord.
